The act of kindness is like a ray of sunshine. It keeps lighting life beyond the horizons.
Today, Dr. Haroona Jumba is an educator, a scholar, a pillar in his community, and a devout father.
His relentless work has transformed the lives of thousands and continues to shape communities for a better future in Uganda.
We are proud that Muntada Aid has played a small part in his illustrious journey since 1985.
This is our shared story.
Dr Jumba was born in 1956 in the small village of Kabigi, some 150 miles from Kampala. His father was a farmer, and Dr Haroona was one of 15 children.
At 12, Dr Haroona received a scholarship to study Arabic in the Gulf state of Kuwait. He was introduced to Muntada Aid, which sponsored his further education in Egypt and the United Kingdom.
After completing his degree in Islamic studies at Al Azhar, one of the world's oldest and most renowned universities, Dr. Haroona returned to Uganda, where he joined a school and began teaching.
However, to further his education and support him on his journey, Muntada Aid initiated a monthly bursary scheme for Dr Haroona, enabling him to continue his studies at Makerere University in Kampala.
In the following years, Dr Haroona received a master's and PhD from Makerere, one of the main hubs of learning in East Africa. Dr Haroona joined the faculty of religious studies in 1996.
During this time, Dr. Haroona also volunteered as a teacher at his ancestral village school, where he continues to serve as a trustee.
Through his connections with Muntada Aid and other organisations, he rallied support for more school infrastructure in the village and persuaded Muntada Aid to fund a medical centre.
During his 25-year career at Makerere, Dr. Haroona taught thousands of children and established the Department of Arabic.
Towards the end of his academic career, Dr Haroona started a primary school for children from disempowered backgrounds.
The school aims to provide these children with strong foundations to compete with children from elite and privileged backgrounds.
His children are also studying at the school.
Muntada Aid is currently sponsoring 72 children at his school.
Dr Haroona's work has a generational impact, and we are glad to be a part of this change.
In a small way, we are part of all the stories these children will become.
Thank you to Dr Haroona and everyone who supports our programmes.
