Maryam’s Smile Gift of Sight Mali 2024
In the Sahel region of West Africa, Mali is among the world’s poorest countries.
One hundred seventy thousand people in Mali are thought to be blind.
There are only two ophthalmologists for every one million people.
Muntada Aid has a long history of working in the Sahel region.
In the last 3 years, we have carried out over 4000 eye operations in the region.
During our latest deployment, I met Maryam, who had been waiting for her cataract operation for five years.
After her operation, I had a brief chat with Maryam. It was amazing to learn about her life and how our Gift of Sight missions are changing lives in this beautiful but tough landscape.
